Single mothers often struggle to meet out their needs. They often give up their dreams of going to some school, earning a degree etc. Fortunately the government has provided several single mother grants to reduce the burden to a larger extent, Unlike loans grants that need not be paid back. But they are repaid in the form of voluntary social services. Grants are associated by company, state, local or tribal government, research institution or academia, not-for-profit, or any other kind of institution.

In order to get single mother grants for studies, she needs to fill a form from Free Application for Federal Student Aid. She becomes eligible for student grants only after filing the form.

The Federal Pell Grant is a popular method for financing single mothers for education. Federal Pell Grants are some direct grants that are awarded by the participating universities to those financially weak students who have not completed their first bachelor's degree. It is also meant for those who are enrolled in some post baccalaureate programs that lead to teacher certification or licensure. The funds are credited to the student’s school account or directly given to students by cheque. One must have a Pell Grant in order to qualify for other federal grants.

Academic Competitive Grant (ACE), National SMART (Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent) Grant are also available. Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant or FSEOG is another student grant for single moms. It helps undergraduate students who are in great need for the money to go to college. This supplemental money will be determined based on their Expected Family Contributions also. If their parents will not be able to contribute much to their education then they will have a better chance of getting this grant.

Most schools and colleges offer grants to single moms in form of work study programs. They offer some job for single moms to do within the campus. They subtract the tuition fee they owe from their earnings. Single mothers also get direct financial assistance from the colleges they enroll in form of book fees, tuition fees etc. Single mother grants are also available from alumni, local club, religious groups etc.

Apart from education, single mother grants are found in other categories like employment, labor, training, housing, food and nutrition, business and commerce, science and technology, transportation, social services and income security, health etc. Federal grant programs like WIC are available which provides supplemental nutritious food to single moms and their children. They target low-income and nutritionally at risk children of single moms.

Apart from federal grants, there are other single mother grants available through states also. Different states have different programs with their own set of eligibility criteria and application process. New York State’s Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) awards up to $5,000 to eligible New York state residents. Kansas Comprehensive Grants awards between $100-$1,100 to eligible Kansas state residents. New Mexico Student Incentive Grant awards between $200 and $2500 a year to eligible New Mexico state residents.

The importance of grants for single mothers is very clear and they must make the best use out of these grants.
